Next week, on May 4th, the paperback of BETWEEN TWO FIRES will be published (with a new cover!), a book the NYT called "deep and revealing" and The Economist said is "wonderfully insightful." Hope to get a chance to talk more about it and all things Russia https://t.co/jXPTrG1ogJ https://t.co/9qcDXIxl1W

I’ve wondered same thing. But my anecdotal sense is no: most Russians skeptical of Sputnik whom I’ve talked to have said they’d be equally hesitant about Western vaccines. General distrust + wing-it, not-scared-of-Covid attitude are more relevant factors. https://t.co/PH2lmrLT6R

Would more Russians be willing to get a jab were they offered Pfizer or Moderna? And would the Russian authorities be ready to buy those Western vaccines to save Russian lives, or would the Russophobic nature of the Putin regime prevent them from doing that? 3/3

I actually can’t think of a more telling or fruitful genre for a Surkov interview than “Lunch with the FT” and @HenryJFoy nails it quite deliciously, apologies for the awful pun. https://t.co/1xA7hhxD4u

“There are two options. First is Anglo-Saxon: you choose what you want “Second is Russian. There is no choice. The chef chooses for you, because he knows better what you want” Welcome to lunch with Vladislav Surkov, the man who built Putin’s fake democracy https://t.co/iC0lvT0PrT

I don’t see how this ends well, or soon: Moscow is now experiencing one of worst Covid surges among major global cities, and is also among the least vaccinated. Even if latter picks up steam (big if) wouldn’t think it could outrun spread of new variants. https://t.co/0iU6WBfpq6

Adding my voice to the many who have spoken with great fondness and admiration for Janet Malcom’s body of work - a true master of the many psychological and intellectual traps we set for ourselves, and who narrated them with humanity and acuity. https://t.co/v6tVxvhpf7

Probably the only concrete deliverable that was likely (or realistically possible) to come out of this summit. Good news, even if not earth shattering, but earth shattering wasn’t on the agenda. https://t.co/7wIGX1tOSd

GENEVA (AP) — Russian President Putin says he and US President Biden agree to return ambassadors to posts in a bid to lower tensions.

Putin’s chief foreign-policy success has been to find ways for Russia to consistently punch far above its weight in geopolitical terms. And what’s better proof of one’s status and import than a photo-op summit covered so breathlessly? https://t.co/2b7nIzyCYm

The degree of attention being afforded the Biden-Putin meeting feels outsized (better suited to a Biden-Xi meeting) so already something of a win for the Kremlin

How is it that Russians could be disoriented and distrustful about vaccine campaign? Putin, May 26: mandatory vaccination is impossible. Speaker of Federation Council, June 2: mandatory vaccination would be illegal. Moscow mayor’s office, June 16: vaccination is now mandatory.

Serious question: is there any other global metropolis besides Moscow where Covid vaccine has been readily available but vaccination program stalled to point of near-failure due to low demand? What a field day for sociological study and analysis.

I don’t know if Moscow authorities will get to the 60% target they’re aiming for—in reality, as opposed to on paper, I mean. Sadly I fear the already existing black market for fake vaccination certificates is about to explode.

Many wondered if/when this would happen, and now it’s here: mandatory vaccination in Moscow for municipal workers and service employees. Wonder how enforceable this is really gonna be. https://t.co/plt9UJijXm

Russia’s never-ending pandemic accelerates further. Clearly some more contagious variants are circulating here. Don’t see how this ends w/out further lockdowns or mandatory vaccination—both of which unpalatable to Kremlin. https://t.co/xVfDMRgsfR

#Coronavirus is raging in Russia again. 13,500 infections nationally with 6,700 in Moscow, the highest daily count since December. 400 deaths recorded as the specialist hospitals reopen and as the vaccination drive grinds too a near standstill https://t.co/FfMXPxr9hd

Just to show what a decade can do… In 2011, the radical art collective Voina won a government sponsored award ($14k!) for a project that consisted of a 210-foot penis painted on a drawbridge in St. Petersburg which pointed at the FSB building! https://t.co/pAClWFeUSO https://t.co/ynlnufI82x

Perhaps a banal observation, but when I moved to Moscow in 2012, things were certainly tense/fraught/etc, but idea that Navalny’s entire org would be banned as extremist and state could try to kill Dmitry Bykov with poison would have struck me as a bit too hard-core to imagine.
