.@tparsi raises a good point here that the prospect of sanctions relief followed by snapback can be more destabilizing to the Iranian economy than no relief.

Just had a great @convSix with @tparsi about Iran's return to nuclear talks. He thinks the Biden administration is the main obstacle to a deal. I think it's the hardline Iranian position. We both agree that Dennis Ross is dead wrong that war will give us peace. You decide:

Always great to talk to @Cirincione - the need for reviving the JCPOA is imperative in our view. The problem lies on both sides imo and both need to be more flexible. For instance, ignoring the US's problem to stick to deals won't help us get back into the JCPOA, imo.

After months of delay, Iran is finally coming back to the negotiating table. But talks are unlikely to get any easier. If the Biden admin wants a breakthrough, it may need to swallow its pride and offer an incentive. More pressure won’t work. My column.

Remember when these ppl told Biden “don’t give up ‘leverage’ of Trump sanctions” “don’t rush back to deal before Iranian election” “demand longer & stronger, Iran is desperate” Dead wrong, as usual. Trump’s sanctions remain, hardliner Iran admin in place, talks frozen. Sit down

Now there is another review process in #Iran to "assess the discussions" between the deputy foreign minister and the EU. Tehran feels it can get away with these games because it's gotten away with so much already, crossing red line after red line, with zero consequences.

DC think tanks in January when there was risk of real Iran talks: take it slow, don’t rush to the table, don’t rush into a deal, we have all the leverage. DC think tanks in October, going in for the kill: OMG Iran dragging its feet & on verge of nuke!! We need plan B, stat!

And what the “maximum pressure” was all about? How successful it was? The only way you’ll change Iran’s calculus with more of the same is that it will indeed go after the nukes as the ultimate deterrent.

We can change Iran’s calculus and restore deterrence, but we must use all our tools: political, diplomatic, economic, intelligence and military. Iran must again fear the consequences of moving toward a threshold nuclear weapons capability. Today it doesn’t

Very important piece. In DC, "countering Iran" is a central justification for a dominant US military presence in the Middle East. Yet, in reality, in many ways, Tehran has BENEFITED from the US's military involvement in the region. Few in the Blob has figured this out yet...

My story on Iran's view of Afghanistan: For two decades, Iran wanted US out of Afghanistan. But the swift Taliban takeover caught them off guard. A classic case of "Be careful what you wish for."

Yesterday, execs at weapons companies lamented "not huge, but meaningful" financial costs from the end of the 20 year US war in Afghanistan but were optimistic about a defense budget "aligned" with and providing "good support for" the weapons biz.
