South African surfer Bianca Buitendag was set to retire years ago. She had a false-positive coronavirus test days before departing for Japan. On the final day of competition, she missed not one but two buses to her event. She won a silver medal.

I spoke with Carissa in Hawaii in mid-June. "When I was a young girl I always dreamed about competing on the championship tour and becoming a world champion," she said [check, x4.] "But to be part of the Olympics? That's just like next level."

Gabriel Medina is out here doing Gabriel Medina things at Tsurigasaki Beach. Landed a complete rotation to earn the highest score surfing has seen at the Olympics – 9.00. Started blowing kisses immediately after his board touched back down on the bottom of the wave.

Wow - Kolohe Andino took down John John Florence to advance to the quarterfinals. “My chances are good, super good,” Andino told @JohnBranchNYT before the Olympics.

Sitting next to @jonathanellis at #Tokyo2020 swimming this morning. After sitting here for 2 hours, he turns to me: "That's a big pool." We're fine.

Surfing has made its Olympic debut. “I'm obviously trying to be as serious as I can be, but it's such an enjoyable experience in one's life to come to the Olympics,” seven time world champion Stephanie Gilmore said.

Yuto Horigome winning the gold medal in skateboarding really has me thinking about the good fortune that comes with open-ended, on-the-ground reporting. You just never know where it might lead. A weird journalism thread from Tokyo:

Olympic runner @emily_infeld was 28 and training for a second #OlympicGames when a man saw her on the internet and became obsessed in 2018. For three years, she lived in fear and often in hiding. @pinepaula and I spent four months investigating the story:

This is free and happening in a few hours, and I'm pretty sure you'll find it interesting and informative -- and that's just my interview with US skateboarders Jordyn Barratt and Zion Wright, plus Adam Ondra and Carissa Moore. Be cool. RSVP.

The Olympics are reaching gender equality for the first time. The headline rolls of the tongue during an Olympics otherwise characterized by high anxiety. But the view from 10,000 feet tells a much different story:

Leo Baker put questions about his gender identity on hold as his skateboarding career soared. In Feb. 2020, he decided to resign from the U.S. women’s Olympic team. "I couldn’t keep putting myself on hold," Baker writes.

How quiet is quiet? You can hear the Swedish players and U.S. players shouting on the field, even with the piped in crowd noise. Live coverage from Tokyo:
