Praising the Lord for one of our “COVID Church Plants.” They celebrated their One Year Anniversary this past Sunday. Grateful for the new room where the children can now meet. A special shoutout to @thompsrus and @LBCNB for being a blessing to these folks over the past year!

I've yet to take one. I'm hoping to schedule one in the next few years. Every ministry leader that I've talked to that has taken one talks about how powerful and healthy it was in their lives. Have you taken one? What would you add to this? Other thoughts? Questions? /end

6. A sabbatical may not be used in conjunction with a move or a change in employment. It is not a severance package. 7. A sabbatical may not be split up. It must all be taken at one time. 8. Husbands and wives who are both on staff should take their sabbatical together. 10/

3. You give a report on how you sabbatical impacted you to our staff upon your return. 4. Less than one-fourth of it may be taken at the staff member’s home. 5. Less than one half of it may be taken with a staff member’s extended family. 9/

Practical Guidelines: 1. The ministry will pay you an additional amount above your salary each week you are gone for an approved sabbatical. 2. You must disconnect from social media, e-mail, and contact with the church family. You cannot attend services at Liberty. 8/

A sabbatical should be something that enriches your life with new experiences, as well as extended time with God and loved ones. You should come home different than when you left. You and your family should be stronger and better prepared for another season of ministry. 6/

Any sabbatical should be cleared on the calendar at least six months in advance. In addition, the schedule and plan of the time away should be approved by the lead pastor. School employees should take their sabbatical during the summer break. 4/

Biblical ministry, done well, is an unbelievably rewarding calling. It can also be a mentally, spiritually, and emotionally-exhausting endeavor. For this reason, we encourage our staff to consider and plan for periodic sabbaticals over the course of their ministry "career." 3/

In addition, I'm up at Ironwood Christian Camp for our annual Teen Camp and a pastor friend mentioned to me yesterday that he is scheduled to be gone from his church the entire month of August for his first sabbatical after 20 years of pastoring. This motivated the thread. 2/

A couple of months ago, I did a thread on 7 regular "trips" every minister should consider if their goal is sustained, healthy ministry for a lifetime. I mentioned that we have implemented a sabbatical policy for our staff. Several asked for details on that. 🧵...

Although I've yet to take a sabbatical, I believe there is great benefit for the minister to consider an extended time away every 5 to 10 years - especially if they have served in the same location for a long time. I may do another 🧵 with more thoughts on this. 17/

Great statement: “ The marketability (or lack thereof) of someone’s Christianity does not dictate the significance of their Christianity.”

The faithful Christian in a small country church is just as important as the Christian who writes books, is on podcast interviews, or speaks on big stages. The marketability (or lack thereof) of someone’s Christianity does not dictate the significance of their Christianity.
