This is how Mexico prepares for Omicron. At the invitation of the President himself, he claims 250k attendees, closer to 50k, prob. doesn't matter. Into a 4th wave, hardly any testing, no CT, 51% double-vaxxed and no mandatory masking; pretty bad, wouldn't you say, @DrEricDing?

It's now clear Omicron was already circulating in the US weeks ago, before it was identified in South Africa and travel bans were instituted. What's less clear is why the punitive and purposeless travel bans are still in place. Rescind them. And thank the South Africa scientists

1. So clearly #Omicron is spreading at least in some parts of the US given a person from Minnesota seems to hae contracted it in NYC. At a LARGE animé convention. Presumably wasn't a one-off. @DrewQJoseph reports.

Getting effective vaccines into arms around the world is essential, but it's not the only action that can block Covid. Masks, distancing, and ventilation are still critical protection measures to reduce spread and save lives.

@RiochtConor2 @drvkeating @michaelmina_lab Antigen is awesome, some may refer to it as snake oil but my sniffles came up positive so I isolated & spent a few days waiting for a pcr. It meant that only me in a family if 5 got covid. Without it I'm sure the outcome would have been different

Let’s face it. The best way for us to grow the economy and, in turn, make your life more affordable is by finishing the fight against COVID-19. And the best way to do that is by getting the job done on vaccines. So that’s what we’re going to do. And everyone has a role to play.

I'm shocked. (No, I'm not). One thing is clear: omicron is established in many countries around the world. I don't think we can even conclude it originated in Africa.

If it isn’t surprising to see high transmission in the group that is unvaccinated - then why was contact tracing removed in schools?

Emerging evidence suggests Omicron spreads easily (whether because inherently more transmissible and/or reinfects more easily). So even if immunity against severe disease fully holds up, countries could face a much faster, larger peak than Delta would have caused:

Why a SARS-CoV-2 variant that's 50% more transmissible would in general be a much bigger problem than a variant that's 50% more deadly. A short thread... 1/
