I haven't said this in like, five minutes, but if you're at the stage of Japanese where you can read but it takes a bit and you just don't know enough words, then read the shit out of Detective Conan. It'll fill in all the useful vocab they never taught you.
Trying speak to myself with kindness and intentionality lately, eg, Did you "sleep through 4 alarms and miss your 10am class," or did you listen to your body & its needs? Did you "fail a very straightforward latin 101 vocab quiz," or did you abide by the honor code? #honorable
I really like anime where you learn a lot of the technical vocab of the discipline they're portraying. Like if it's a sports anime, I really like if I learn a few tactical ideas or if it's a cooking show, I like learning names of dishes and culinary techniques.
Today my students had NWEA MAP testing.
"Miss today there was a word in my reading that I knew because it was in my independent book! I wouldn't have known it if I hadn't read that book before!"
teaching vocab w/o Teaching Vocab looks a lot like natural literacy 🤔
