also lol everyone saying "but every mom already has the waterlilies scarf from the met store"...the met store is the GOAT but also the gateway drug for museum shoppery and you have to push past the monet table mentally and imaginatively! the monet table is for rubes!
the key -- i will explain this -- is that the scarf needs a STORY and you must tell the story in the giving (either through a card or verbally etc) and then the scarf will ALWAYS have the story, otherwise its just a piece of silk you bought on a whim because it has matisse on it
scarves always edge dangerously close to "i didn't know what else to get you but you are a middle-aged woman so...i guess...this?" but if you are intentional about it it can be a home run...a VERY dangerous game!!!!!!
writing my museum shop gift guide and i think i need to devote an entire section just to scarves: are they good gifts? or are they the piano key tie of the silken gifting universe? my contention is they are GOOD but you have to do it right
