I suppose I see beta readers in the same way as I see beta testers in the gaming industry. They get the first try and are there to flag up all the faults, so the creators can correct them before the official launch.

Recently dealt with someone who Would. Not. Hear criticism. Ignored every suggestion& continued to tell me they’d had agents talk to them & they’d worked with published authors. Just makes me curious why people want beta readers if they are not looking for them to find fault?

1/2 During the #editing phase, how do you deal with criticism? As a soon to be self published #writer I welcome someone telling me that something doesn’t work. The pickier the better. Because it will (hopefully) save me from trying to sell something bad! #WritingCommunity

There is possibly some kind of field that could be added. I need to give it a proper look. But anyway, I thought I’d just share the worst of my issues. Thanks so much to everyone who commented with support or suggestions. Sorry if I haven’t got around to replying to everyone.

But your page 3 would start on 1. This is a problem for a paperback author when you have a cover page, copyright page, dedication at the minimum. I thought about using a text box and adding them all manually, but 388 yikes! So I need to look into it a little more.

Finally page numbers. This is another one I haven’t yet cracked but will certainly not be giving up on. Word had the same problem with page numbers as it does with headers. You can remove the page number from a cover page. And you can have the numbers start at 0(for a title page)

Exporting to PDF. But that seems overly fussy and complicated for 388 pages. I think I’m going to just give up with the header. I’m not sure how needed it is. Just looks nice and professional.

Sadly Word only lets you remove the header for the first page. The only way to get around this seems to be section breaks- which, as I’ve mentioned, creates more problems. The only way I can see to do this at present is to remove the header completely, or add a text box before…

Header (& Footer) Frustrating for paperback formatting as you have the title page, copyright page and dedication that you don’t want included with the header. Personally I also didn’t want my chapter title pages to have a header either.

Extra pages being added in where I didn’t want them. Took ages to work out it was the section breaks. Easy to solve. Simply remove the section breaks. Issue is then, however that formatting is affected. And I had to go back to the drawing board with the header.

Section breaks. So for me this was the biggest issue and I didn’t realise it was an issue until much later. I used next page section breaks to avoid my header being used on my chapter title pages. Unfortunately when I can to exporting to pdf or uploading to KDP it meant…

Of what KDP said. So my outside margins became inside, and vice versa. This solved the problem, but I still had to tweak. Problems arose because I’d used the minimum requirements. So words in italics would sometimes breach the margin. Took a bit of playing around but I got there.

The biggest problem that I had when uploading to KDP were that it inverted my margins. So where KDP had said inside margin 1.59cm, when it came to formatting it through KDP it ended up having an outside margin of 1.59cm. Completely illogical, but solved by using the inverse…

Margins. Bane of my life. Essentially, work out what size your page is, set the page size in page setup and then set your margins, using the details that KDP suggest based on your book size and page numbers. Sounds easy. It’s not! DO NOT FORGET to mirror margins.

So, to follow on from yesterday’s events, I’d like to sum up the root of the issues I faced. Margins, section breaks, headers & page numbers. I have mainly solved the issues now but thought I’d detail what I’ve learned for anyone else who is having the same issue or is yet to.
