Dominant Western post-1989 thinking was so fantastic, so unhinged to any reality of what was happening, so full of wishful thinking that its bill is still being paid.

True political freedom can only be achieved if everyone remains perfectly still. Movement is aggression.

America thinks Russia is in decline, Russia thinks America is in decline; China thinks America is in decline, America thinks China is in decline; America, Russia, and China all think Europe is decline, Europe agrees.

Andrey Kortunov identifies something that absolutely pervades the commentary you see out of Washington and Moscow: each side thinks the other’s civilization is essentially doomed. And for good reasons.

Eventually we’ll figure out that the vast majority of ailments are caused by infectious agents and other factors (carcinogens, genetics, aging, etc) merely change the nature of the infection and therefore the course of the disease.

How much should we be upping our probabilities that a bunch of other mysterious ailments are caused by viruses too?

That the very idea of a 'social science' is the product of philosophical confusion explains the character of so much work in the field, where interesting descriptive content is wedded to perfunctory 'hypothesis testing' that reads like a bored undergrad meeting requirements.

The empty nature of anti-China content produces a public that is certain that China is 'up to something' but knows nothing about it other than that some words are involved and so you get truly bizarre stuff like this.

One reason China takes are so often just plain weird is that US/UK media reporting on China is largely contentless. It merely uses a lot of adjectives and qualifiers like 'Beijing claims' to create a sense that something is 'off' without giving any real detail.

Might seem mundane in relation to those suffering at the margins, but if one looks at the 'collapse' of the Roman Empire, I'm informed that a lot of it was just this sort of gradual rot. Future historians and podcasters will actually pore over this stuff

It's weird that people interpret Wittgenstein as some sort of woolly-headed relativist, given the man himself. I suppose they just think his life and behavior were a result of failure to live up to his own 'worldview' or something.

This is really just what development states do all the time. Use state power to push capitalists to invest in things of long-term value to the nation rather than just seek profits in whatever short-sighted way suits them.

The point, Liu says, is that China's digital economy is growing up. It used to hang out at the mall, disrupting pizza delivery or whatevs. Now, it's time for the digital economy to shoulder adult responsibilities, and help the real economy function better. 4/12

The question 'Why hasn't China become a liberal democracy?' is really the question 'Why hasn't China adopted the propaganda of the United States and its vassals?' and the answer is that the United States failed to vassalize China.

Combating scientism isn't ever going to be as simple as 'post-positivist' consultants visiting government agencies with a slide deck on 'scientism dos and don'ts'. You'd have to change the entire extended economy of government that expects these sort of 'insights'.
