I have a big announcement. I'm taking my Substack on monopolies paid. I'll explain more tomorrow, but the gist is that the newsletter has been so much more successful at addressing monopolies than I ever could have dreamed.

The biggest obstacle we face in protecting ourselves with China is corporate America. Apple transferred tech to China, used slave labor, and advocates on behalf of the Chinese government. Tim Cook should have to register as a foreign lobbyist.

Apple CEO Tim Cook secretly signed a five-year investment agreement with Beijing in 2016. Internal Apple documents provide a rare glimpse at Apple's interaction with Chinese officials over the years. My latest scoop for @theinformation

BREAKING: Saule Omarova has withdrawn for consideration to be the next comptroller of the currency. @POTUS has accepted. Some Republicans suggested Ms. Omarova was a communist. Banks fiercely opposed her, w/some lobbyists echoing qs on her "Soviet" origins

There's wage growth at the low end and at the very high end, but the broad middle is seeing lower real wages. And housing is increasingly out of reach. Liberal Fed types see poverty alleviation and charity as their goal, so they are happy. No one else is.

TEARS OF JOY! JOY! I oversaw the Fed's Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking with the $400 question, showing that millions of Americans would struggle with a small emergency expense. was so bad in 2013. IT WAS BEST EVER in 2020. yes, 2020. see lifeline above.

@jonst0kes @matthewstoller Except there was no equivalent then to the unregulated casino of cryptocurrency speculation, and even archie and gopher did stuff that anyone could see was useful. Where is the NCSA Mosaic for web3, the thing where if you spend ten minutes using it you understand it's huge?

Watching this important hearing on ocean shipping disruptions. @SenatorWicker is angry that the administration is "cooking the books" on the crisis by hiding ships 150 miles offshore so they aren't counted, and he's right.

Yellen calls for the U.S. to be less dependent on foreign supply chains. “It’s possible that policies that people will describe as protectionist are going to be necessary in order to create the appropriate incentives to produce things at home.”

Great move. I have long been an advocate of using public policy measures to help decouple and shift supply chains away from China. Whether solar panels at need to think more about how to shift production away and that means helping other countries

To be clear my concern here isn’t privacy, it’s China. I don’t want that country’s creepy government having any leverage over what 100 million Americans watch.
