Apparently Teofimo Lopez should not have been medically cleared to fight George Kambosos and had an acute respiratory illness that could’ve been lethal. The doctors interviewed for this article seem genuinely alarmed. From ESPN:

@lthomasnews It's recency bias but considering context that might be the KO of the Year for 2021. Title fights don't end in spinning backfist KOs and certainly not when a fighter is losing badly.

It’s an unlikely event given what had happened in other rounds, but exchanging in short space along the fence line like that where you have to angle off - the opposite of what Horiguchi was doing previously - is always a dangerous proposition.

Sergio Pettis promised his breakthrough finish against Kyoji Horiguchi in our pre-fight interview. Man delivered and then some. What a freaking shot!

I'll say this for Sergio Pettis: he did not lay down when things went badly. He was still trying to win. You can call that a fluke, but it's not. He changed the strategy a bit and threw that strike with intention. His willingness to mentally stay in the fight won him that.

Pettis is getting hit more, but he's got a better chance of winning in a crowded spot than at long range.

In a fight where he was losing EVERY minute, Sergio Pettis spinning backfists Kyoji Horiguchi, knocking him out in one shot. You have got to be kidding me!!!!

Horiguchi's jab into the knee tap was sublime.

This is turning into one-way traffic. Nothing by itself completely overwhelming, but the total effort has, thus far, been more than Pettis can handle.

Pettis is giving Horiguchi way too much room. Look at all the space he has to turn, blitz, angle off and whatever else. He's got all of the real estate. If he can move like this, he's going to be hard to beat.

Horiguchi knocked Asakura off of his feet with calf kicks, too. He's got that technique dialed in.

It's subtle and part of a larger strategy, but Horiguchi's ability to burn the clock while making Pettis wait around is super underrated. Movement and heavy feinting when they're facing off is having an effect.

Main event up next. This is an A+ fight and then some. It's a reflection of each participant's unique (and elite) journey. It's also a showcase fight in the most ascendant division in the sport. This should be good.
