If we get GOP governors in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin or Michigan, it becomes more likely that rogue presidential electors get appointed and 2024 is stolen.
With a GOP House, it's actually possible. I gamed out what this would look like, with experts:
of course the basic problem is that most of the republican party has come to believe that any democratic election victory is inherently illegitimate as votes for democrats are themselves “fraudulent votes”
@jbouie "Democratic lawyer Marc Elias suggests Congress should remove control of certification of electors from officials such as governors and place it in the hands of less partisan actors, such as state justices."
That would just make it so state judicial elections become contentious.
@jbouie This is a really essential point that I don't see people emphasizing nearly enough. Besides being anti-democratic in itself, the EC can empower anti-democratic forces in a way a majority-vote system wouldn't.
@jbouie@mattyglesias The most annoying thing about the mythology is that the coasts are filled with so much more people than the interior, and we need the electoral college to counteract them. There’s a heck of a lot of people not on the coasts! There’s 50,000,000 people in the urban Midwest!
