The state of Missouri commissioned a study to see if mask mandates worked. When the results came in, showing they saved lives, the state blocked publication in order to maintain its attempt to force cities like St. Louis to end their mask mandates:

"We have built a global system of health that doesn’t operate on the sacred logic that all people are worth saving. We have built a system that operates on market logic — that if you can pay and live in the right region, you are worthy of saving."

By a 5–2 vote, the (extremely conservative) Florida Supreme Court holds that criminal defendants who exercise their right against self-incrimination by refusing to admit guilt may be punished with higher sentences due to "lack of remorse."

This from @RickKahlenberg is very good and his call for an Economic Fair Housing Act is smart -- people should be able to sue when localities purposefully segregate by class.

driving is amazing because people are constantly asked to place a value on the lives of themselves and others and they regularly come back with like "two or three seconds of my commute"

This is an excellent-and for my money very accurate-assessment of the Democratic disaster in 1994 and a warning of how Manchin in particular may be courting a repeat by throwing up a seemingly endless array of obstacles to finishing Biden's core economic agenda.

the fun thing about this is that many/most of these abortions bans will pass with simple majorities but thanks to the filibuster a federal law to *maintain the status quo* requires a legislative supermajority

“People talk a lot about how democracy itself is on the line in the 2022 election. What this misses is that in a number of states majority rule is already a thing of the past in state governments b/c the legislatures are so effectively gerrymandered.”

Another way to put this, of course, is that if Democrats gave up trying to represent politically disfavored groups, they might be able to win over political favored groups whose votes count more. This response, in other words, is little more than a taunt.

The usual rejoinder to the fact that Republicans in several states have gerrymandered themselves into nearly-permanent majorities is that Democrats could simply appeal to the rural voters in question.
