"Given you acknowledged...in March 2020 that Asian countries were masking up at the time, saying we shouldn't mask up as well was a mistake, wasn't it... at the time, not just in hindsight?" My question to Dr Fauci. Listen to his very passionate response: https://t.co/BAf4qp0m6G

I enjoyed "ram through" as a synonym for "pass into law." https://t.co/UymSd8hnMM

Candidate Biden suggested he would be a moderate, transitional president. Nearly three months in, President Biden has blazed a different path, aiming to be a transformational president – using his narrow majority to ram through the biggest expansion of government since LBJ. https://t.co/XgkLse7IRu

On finishing this article https://t.co/ccbOEgW4Rt a thought I had was this: One of the consequences of never admitting that even when excellent your news coverage has a built-in POV — a view from somewhere — is that when that POV has to evolve and change you are at a loss.

Not saying his words should never be amplified by journalists, but I am saying they would be smart to share their reasoning when they chose that route. https://t.co/xJfc3GqWUY

If you report as news what the Palm Beach Troll says, you should explain the grounds on which you are claiming newsworthiness. Normal categories: man bites dog, affects lots of people, novel development, public hazard, holds power accountable, connects dots, human interest...

“The advantage of a local owner who cares about the community is that they in theory can give you runway and also say, ‘Operate at break-even on a cash-flow basis and you’re good.’” That captures why billionaires buying newspapers is sometimes welcomed. https://t.co/oq9NlhK4Rl

Academics in social science are used to problems where there is no good answer. We have phrases for what to do. "Ad hoc reasoning" is one. "Piecemeal social engineering." A more vernacular term would be "muddling through." See my post on wicked problems. https://t.co/h0QHB1B9DO

In my own study of disinformation and the press, this was the key thing I learned: There's no good answer to the problem Mehdi describes. Only better or worse judgment calls. However, I would not use "middle ground" imagery. It's more like an arrow pointing one way, then another. https://t.co/9b9HplzoIx

I do think we urgently need to find a middle ground between 1) loudly elevating and amplifying the Trumps and Tuckers of this world and giving them the attention they crave, and 2) pretending that if we ignore them, they'll go away and/or won't harm the rest of us. It's tricky.

"As debate over the infrastructure bill intensifies in the weeks to come, Republicans may focus less on trying to discredit the proposal than on diverting their voters—by keeping their attention on disputes that widen the cultural gulf..." https://t.co/vc5oWJujhS

The loss of the public editor or ombudsman role — there are only a handful left now — is a case of professional culture triumphing OVER the public. https://t.co/fPtVZBiKco That is a sad outcome. For everyone.

"Using ratings to determine news value is riddled with potential problems. Basing today’s content on what people wanted to watch yesterday means you inherently lose the 'new' in news." https://t.co/7Bj3SPLP0q Recommended.

The more you think about the quote below, the more confusing the picture becomes. It turns news coverage of the Republican Party into a möbius strip. (Don't @ me with how not new this problem is, please. Thanks.) https://t.co/xITH9U87lr https://t.co/pmhEKsQ2iY

This is how you dismantle an independent press, piece by piece. It's happening now in Poland. Chilling description by @fromTGA. https://t.co/ZApRvs3x7T https://t.co/Kc6bgTCZYu

I love this. @19thnews, a "nonprofit newsroom reporting at the intersection of gender, politics and policy," decided to revise their self-description "by dropping the word 'nonpartisan' as an aspirational standard and replacing it with 'independent.'" https://t.co/VJQm6BeqS2

The discovery process was “so burdensome that we ha[d] two reporters and one editor working full time on this.” https://t.co/A1xr69caUO How a meritless libel case against @reveal created huge problems for the non-profit investigative newsroom, even though they won the case.

In the Reporters Without Borders world press freedom rankings, the United States stands 45th, between Papua New Guinea and the Organization of the Eastern Caribbean States. https://t.co/mLsfQXncXN Canada is 16.

When you announce a new nonprofit newsroom with real journalism jobs that will cover green energy, it would be smart to state clearly what your plan is to sustain those jobs. https://t.co/ux51Uqm5k6 From this it sounds like a sponsored content model, but why do I have to guess?
