The chaotic, deadly withdrawal from #Afghanistan and the evacuation mission in #Kabul sparked much partisan, angry fighting. Here’s what it was actually like on the ground, up close. My latest for @NewYorker

The reporter @janeferguson5, who has covered Afghanistan for 13 years, landed in Kabul the morning of August 15th. Hers was the last commercial flight from Dubai to do so. “As we land, I don’t know if the city will have fallen,” she wrote at the time.

My second guest was the wonderful and kind @JaneFerguson5. We talked about the looming #Afghanistan withdrawal, how women would be affected, and the importance of women in peace processes.

I’ve always felt the @FT is one of the smartest publications out there. Now we have confirmation. Their critics recommend @jessdonati’s excellent book #eagledown as one of the best for 2021. If you want real context to the fall of #Afghanistan’s govt, this book is excellent.

Follow Sangar if you want to know more about the stories of refugees sent back to Kurdistan and Iraq from #Belarus. One Yazidi family doesn't even have the money to get back to the camp they live in (their homeland having already been destroyed during ISIS invasion)

@JaneFerguson5 @pbsnewshour spoke to the legend who is Alberto Cairo, who has been in #Afghanistan for 30 years helping people to walk again. Always inspiring to see him at work - and a reminder of why Afghans need continued support.

This image taken by @JaneFerguson5 really struck a chord. Step away from your desk for a second and pause. This is a child. A little boy who has lost his leg to war. How can we all sit by silently and watch millions more children in Afghanistan grow up in poverty and war?

Let’s discuss further some of the issues @JaneFerguson5 is talking about. As she points out, development aid and humanitarian aid are two different things. Afghanistan is heavily reliant on both, but development funds have been frozen and so the health sector is collapsing.
