You start to see some of that in the US: companies like Instagram, TikTok and Clubhouse have set billions aside as "Creator Funds," trying to win over creators. What we haven't seen is the willingness to blur the line between just about anything, like what's happening in China.

Remember all the transactions still happen on Taobao. Streamers don't need their own stores or do anything other than the streaming itself. It may feel like (and is) a big win for streamers like Li Jiaqi. It's an even bigger win for Taobao in the platform war. 4/5

The two streams yesterday happened on Taobao, and they are "semi-official." Instead of the platform itself promoting things for people to buy, it lets streamers do the selling and simply sends over the traffic. Everything in China is carefully planned and not accidental. 3/5

ALL major ecommerce platforms in China have live streaming features. And non-ecommerce platforms (such as Douyin, China's TikTok) are quick to becoming one. So they pour their resources and direct a TON of their traffic to streaming rooms, trying to win over streamers. 2/5

There's another important aspect to it: platform wars in China. If you use the consumer apps in China, you'll notice that perhaps 80% of their features overlap with each other. The country has perhaps the most fierce competition in the world. 1/5

So to summarize: - streamers like Li Jiaqi established their credibility as curators, which is a compounding factor that attracted viewers - which in turn made them aggregators that gave them negotiating power with merchants for the best price.

And merchants love it: - It brings them the endorsement by the "trusted source" - It exposes their product to millions of people - They can prepare for the surge in orders in advance, because they know when the streaming will happen, and they know it WILL sell.
