So the Aus pub date for my book "Into the Rip" has been pushed by a month (to 1 Oct) thanks to the lockdown. But I'm grateful to @BplusPNews for a review that recognizes its timeliness!

I went to see a revival of “Death of a Salesman” at ⁦@SydneyTheatreCo⁩ last night. And the laughter and sadness of the audience made me think that those who live outside the US already see the nation as ⁦@fmanjoo⁩ describes it here.

Seeing this kind of thing always makes me smile. No need to wait until 77 either. Dive into something new, mess up, laugh, fail, improve and enjoy the wonder.

My father is 77 years old and has stage 4 prostate cancer. He decided to learn how to ice skate a few years ago, and just did this performance with his teacher. For anyone that thinks it’s too late to try something new… ❤️

This is great news for @nytimes. ⁦@gaiatripoli⁩ is a talent. She has done so much brilliant work for so many years. It’s great to see her gain the recognition and leadership position she deserves. ⁦We are lucky!

Makes sense. The burden of the boomers (financial and political?) just seems kind of enormous across so many countries.

Chile might be the world’s strongest example right now of democracy’s ability to adapt. Where else is democracy growing, changing and evolving to be more inclusive and pragmatic? Honestly I’m looking for examples.

Chile became the 31st nation to legalize same-sex marriage on Tuesday, a landmark victory for gay rights activists that underscores how profoundly the country’s politics and society have shifted in the past decade.

George Packer has been one of the most thoughtful commentators on American democracy for a long time. This piece lays out not just the problem but also a solution: more IRL involvement and not in protests. Bolster institutions. Sign up to work, volunteer.

Always exciting to see @nytimes innovation come to life. Will be interesting to see how this develops. I’ve been listening to more stories lately. Maybe others too?

1 Today’s a huge day for our team as we’re sharing our new app, NYT Audio, w/ our 1st cohort of external Beta testers. This moment, when the work goes from being a hypothesis to being a product in people’s hands, is one of the most thrilling parts of creating new things.

YES "If the world is going to beat the pandemic, countries need policies that promote a basic, but increasingly forgotten, idea: that our individual flourishing is bound up in collective well-being."

Over at the New York Times - which won a Pulitzer for pushing the Russia hoax - they’re genuinely claiming that Biden is getting tougher treatment from the media than Trump did. They have charts and all 😂

Many of us might have expected a bit less ignorance from a @Stanford prof. But domestic politics in America distort interpretations of the wider world, and Australia is just the latest example.

The end point of contact tracing in Australia is apparently concentration camps for casual contacts of covid patients, w/no due process for the interred. Choose: a liberal democracy or a bio-security state focused on covid control. Thx, @freddiesayers

Such a thoughtful, surprising piece of journalism. Our culture often struggles with the idea of human malleability. We are not only our worst mistakes. Thanks to ⁦@BillAdairDuke⁩ for writing with honesty about honesty. A lesson for all.

Finally someone connects the dots between democracy decline in the US and elsewhere and the steady rise and increased connections among autocrats. Eye opening work from ⁦@anneapplebaum⁩. Greed runs like a river through it all.
