It happens to so many professionals of Asian descent: We get mixed up with another Asian. What I (Brian X. Chen at @nytimes, not Brian Lam, Jason or David Chen) sought to explore was why this happens universally and what the damage could be to our careers

Apple delayed its return date. Google reinstated a mask policy. Morgan Stanley mandated vaccines. The virus surge, driven by the Delta variant, is disrupting companies' return-to-office plans and has executives "pulling their hair out." W/@LaurenSHirsch:

Writers seem to be using the word "variant" a lot more these days. Exhibit B: "time variants" in the Loki show on Disney+. Wonder what's on everyone's minds

Recently noticed that the only people declaring that "the pandemic is over" tend to be the most privileged I know. Anyone else noticing this?

Lol at some of the reactions to this tweet. The story is about following bots that tweet restock updates. It says not to use bots that auto-buy PS5s. There's nothing inherently wrong with following a restock bot to know when to check a retail site

New column: Bots have a bad rep, but they can be a valuable tool to obtaining the unobtainable, like the PlayStation 5

I give up on using AirPods for video calls on a Mac. So many connection problems. Anyone own a cheapish wired USB headset that they love?

If you're wondering how bad Delta really is, even in highly vaccinated SF (76% of >age 12 fully vaxxed) & still w/ a lot of masking (most folks in stores), we're seeing a pretty steep Covid uptick. Daily cases up 4-fold (10->42; Fig L), hospital pts doubled (9->19; R)(Thread 1/4)

"Why won’t unauthorized fixers become authorized?" asks @bxchen in one of the most interesting parts of his excellent column, "Why You Should Care About Your Right to Repair Gadgets" 1/

Rewatched Terminator 2 and realized it is the quintessential '90s Dad movie. Arnold is the stand-in for the absent father. Even as a stand-in he's only present for one adventure to kill the T1000. When his job is done, it's hasta la vista and Sarah is left to do all the parenting

New column: Why you should care about the right-to-repair movement If tech maintenance were simpler and more practical to do, buying new phones would be a last resort, similar to buying a new car.

Re: people who are asking about what black money means, please Google it. you could fill in the blank with any word - "your _____ is ruining our country" - and the effect of othering us for being of Asian descent happens no matter what word it is.

I have most of it on video, but it'd be inappropriate to try to cancel her. What a traumatizing experience, almost as bad as @HirokoTabuchi's incident

Welp, it finally happened. Wife and I were taking a walk outside after dinner, and a lady screamed at us to put masks on. I pointed out that we were vaccinated and outdoors. After an incoherent rant, she shouted, "Your black money is ruining our country."

Microsoft says the design of the new Windows is centered on you, the person using the product. (Not new is this constant reminder from tech companies that their products were made for people, as opposed to my Labrador retriever)

A strong argument against Zoom calls is that there's a drought, and we could shower/groom ourselves less often if most of our remote meetings took place on the phone
