Tokyo's Nakagin Capsule Tower is facing demolition. The 140-unit complex (actually, it's two towers) designed by Metabolist Movement architect Kisho Kurokawa opened in 1972. Anyone who has seen this striking building will remember it. (1/12)

I went to Chizu in Tottori w/ @imakiky to talk to residents about the disparities in Japan’s voting system, which gives more weight to rural voters. One big, visible result: they get a lot of government spending: new library, schools, beautiful roads

.@benjamindooley and @hikarimaehida write that proponents in Japan hope that CBD — which has some proven medical benefits but none of marijuana’s intoxicating effects — can become a gateway to the so-called gateway drug.

The Japan Communist Party is about as radical as a beige cardigan, write @BenjaminDooley @hudidi1 but that hasn’t stopped the ruling Liberal Democrats from making it the boogeyman for upcoming general election

There was no televised wedding or a balcony kiss, but the romance was there. With just a trip to a Tokyo registry office, handled by royal representatives, Princess Mako of Japan was married to Kei Komuro. But the path to this moment has been torturous.

The new film does a good job of capturing the literary experience of quitting Dune somewhere in the middle but still telling people you read it.

Japan has dammed most of its rivers & lined them with concrete. Giant concrete jacks to fight erosion dot the coastline. Now some object to villagers' push to add a concrete wall to a pristine beach. @benjamindooley

“Disasters are always more than you imagine. What will YOU do when the time comes?” A truly inspired choice for a Japanese disaster preparation drill poster. I pray they let us try the maser cannons.

I should have added a big thank you to @Matt_Alt and his love for Japanese pop culture. His tweets led me to this story. His book "Pure Invention" is a great read for those interested in the world of Japanese toys (and other pop cultural innovations)

Gashapon go global, with a piece in the NYT by @BenjaminDooley. Great look behind the scenes, but there's a surprising amount of anger directed at the concept in the comments, mainly over perceptions of the (mis)use of plastic.

Super fun story to report. The bureau is the proud owner of a miniature water cooler.

Yoshiaki Yamanishi set out to make the most boring toy imaginable. He landed on a tiny model air-conditioner. In the booming world of Japanese capsule vending machines, which dispense miniature versions of everyday items, the more mundane the better.
