Gold medalist Marieke Vervoort allowed photographer @lynseyaddario and me into her life as she wrestled with the incredible task of picking a day to die:

Was in LIC recently and said something along the lines of "Oh wow lot of Asian people." Good to see my astute observation confirmed by @nicole_hong, who goes deep on a real phenomenon (including the effects of economic disparities among Asians in NYC)

Tore through @jaycaspiankang’s book. Thought-provoking on the contradictions of Asian life in the US. Appreciated the mini histories of Flushing and LA’s Koreatown. (Also, enjoyed learning more about how Jay became the way that he is.) Great read!

Sawamura’s English may be limited but, according to Hernandez, “he knows every word to a few of Alicia Keys’s songs; Sawamura has a talent that not a lot of people have discovered yet.” -fun read this morning from the great @LemireJoe

“The beat of it, the flow of it, puts you in a good mood,” said Plawecki, who called himself more a “vibe guy” while acknowledging that the lyrics — about a clubgoer watching a former lover with a new flame — “don’t make sense at all” for baseball.

"It's almost like the sky's the limit for him," Gregg Berhalter said of Sergiño Dest. "He can be as good as he wants to be. You saw today with his attacking play. It's unreal." Our game story on Sergiño's fun night and the U.S.'s 2-1 win over Costa Rica:

The AP's Ron Blum asks Dest if his shoelaces were untied for his goal. "I think my shoelaces were loose," Dest said. "I watched it back in the dressing room, and it was not tied."

Funny to watch Dest, who had a very nice night, take the longest possible route back to the bench after being subbed. He was walking slowly, riling up the crowd on the far sideline and behind the goal. Now he's high-fiving every fan sitting along the sideline near the U.S. bench.

"All right! Here's a new chant!" one of the U.S. fan leaders says on the jumbotron as they prepare to start the second half. Attn: @AndrewDasNYT

By my quick count, that was a 13-pass move by the U.S. preceding Dest's very nice goal

Gregg Berhalter: "It wasn't a lack of trying. It was just, we didn't have that 100 percent today.... We were poor. We were really poor with our passing and some of our movement."

Continuing the good vibes from one performance to the next can be tough, it turns out, when you switch out all your top performers.

I wrote about fans who follow the U.S. men's soccer team to Central America and the Caribbean. They recalled hiking in Honduras and saving sea turtles in Trinidad and adopting a donkey in Antigua. "His name is Stevie," one of the donkey adopters told me:

There’s nothing like hitting the road for World Cup qualifiers. US players always say it — and these fans agree. A handful are trying to hit all seven away games this cycle, in Central America and the Caribbean, before the process changes forever:

Fun story from @DavidWaldstein, who spoke to people biking — or jogging or scootering — across the George Washington Bridge until their phones confirm they’re in New Jersey to bet on football games while, of course, avoiding the $16 toll:

Anyone who knows the joy of travelling to World Cup qualifiers (and I dedicated three years of my life to them) will recognise the addiction in this story. But also, with a 48 team World Cup, that world is about the change forever...

Hitting the road for a World Cup qualifier might be one of the most unsung fan experiences in U.S. sports. Expansion of the finals, starting in 2026, might change it forever. @andrewkeh and @TamirBenKalifa on the USMNT fans who love to go the extra mile.

Berhalter on McKennie's return: "He knew a lot of eyes were going to be on him. The way I would characterize his performance is professional… It wasn't the top level he could produce, but it was up there."
