I woke up this morning feeling strangely unsettled...and realised that despite (or perhaps, because of) 30+yrs in conventional govt service, I'm now starting to question everything I thought I once knew about my country and its institutions.

So sad to hear about the death of John Rendall, who rescued Christian the Lion from Harrods in 1969, and had a joyful reunion with him a year later in Kenya, as captured in this magical video. The ultimate feel good story...from a more innocent time

The "big picture" for me is that at a time of multiple domestic and international crises, our current Prime Minister is totally unfit for office. As a voter - my priority is to try to get him removed, and a more competent and honest one in his place....if such can be found.

Currently @Conservatives backbench MPs are getting a pep talk from @OliverDowden the party chairman, urging them to focus on the big picture and voters' priorities. They may have assumed when he was booked that he would be talking about the Sue Gray report.

Authors note all this would be much easier if we were still in the EU (whose centre of gravity due to our departure has moved towards softer stance on Russia) - and urge that we shd not let other Brexit rows impede cooperative foreign pol rel with EU. IMHO All excellent points.

Work with EU/other European countries to reduce dependence on Russian gas; contain damaging Russian activity in third countries beyond Europe - eg in Africa, ME etc; whilst not ruling out efforts to cooperate with Russia where we can - eg counter proliferation, terrorism;

Highly commend this terrific article by my former colleagues @CER_IanBond and Duncan Allan: thrust of which is that UK needs a more coherent policy on Russia, not just rallying in support of Ukraine now, but addressing broader threats from Russia..incl 🧵

This is correct. As I commented to someone else just now, if I hadn't already resigned, I would have done so over this. It's total abuse of government machinery. The FCDO should not allow itself to become the Ministry of Propaganda.

@alexhallhall It is also explicitly placing the FO in political opposition to the majority of people in NI - British citizens - who support the Protocol, and aligning institutions of state with the political agenda of the DUP. Toxic behaviour within the context of NI and its history.

And I want to know, how on earth was this signed off as a legitimate video by a civil servant? It is such a one sided, distorted representation of the NIP situation that in no way can it meet the spirit of the standards of the civil service code.

Great article (not firewalled) "A system in which leaders obey the laws they impose is central to maintaining trust in democracy. This is not about parties or cakes but wanton breaches of laws.. ...no country that insists on this standard has lost its sense of proportion."

A desperate leader haemorrhaging authority and waiting for the blow to fall is the worst outcome of all. Why even Tories who want Johnson to stay should want this crisis brought to a head with a leadership vote.
