Late post bc I had no signal downtown, but here are the hundreds of CPS kids and supporters protesting outside district HQ after walking out over COVID-19 conditions today. Lots of anti-Lightfoot chanting. Threading some interviews below:

The Office of the Independent Inspector General released a report today finding a Cook County elected official violated the ethics ordinance by hiring their first cousin to a high-level position — and should remove that relative. No names revealed, but I texted Comm. Wendt.

Cook County Board of Review commissioner Tammy Wendy hired her cousin to be chief of staff. Michael Cabonargi ripped her for it, though he also hired fellow commissioner Larry Rogers' cousin for a taxpayer-funded job. Old school county yikes! @byaliceyin

Why is nobody worried what @MLBSteveTrout thinks about the North Siders retiring his no. 34 jersey? Key cog in the '84 rotation!

Now that Jon Lester has called it quits on his 16-year career, the Cubs need to pick a good day in 2022 to retire his No. 34. But the tricky part is that Kerry Wood also wore No. 34. @PWSullivan 's column.

For second meeting in a row, Rules Committee adjourns without substantively discussing the ward remap stand-off. Took public testimony, then adjourned.

Former 11th Ward Ald. James Balcer, who stepped down and cleared the way for Patrick Daley Thompson to succeed him, phones in to Rules Committee to argue Canaryville should not be removed from the ward in the remap.

Nice Chicago accent moment at the Rules Committee meeting, as a Canaryville resident urging aldermen not to break up the traditional 11th Ward (obligatory 'Daley Family Seat of Power' mention) ends his remarks with "Wit dat, thank you, and yous all have a good day."

Given politicization of vaccine, Arwady says doesn't seem plausible to completely restrict movement of unvaxxed people in US cities, though points out the vax rules on bars, restaurants as a step the city took to regulate optional settings.

. @AldermanErvin says elected officials need to "call balls and strikes," take harder line against people who choose not to get vaxxed and thereby put vaccinated people at risk. Mentions grocery stores, says maybe unvaxxed people "need to get DoorDash" to get groceries delivered.

"Entirely possible" Covid vaccine could be mandated for CPS students, Arwady says, but next school year at the earliest, after the vaccine gets full FDA approval instead of emergency use authorization for younger kids.

If CPS opens during omicron surge, "I think we would potentially see a lot of cases," Arwady says, but not convinced would see evidence schools are a serious source of outbreaks.

Arwady says public health shifting to "harm-reduction approach" instead of straight-up stopping spread of omicron, because it's too transmissible to eliminate the risk. Plus, by and large people not getting very sick. "More kids die from car crashes" than omicron.

Arwady: If hospitals can't handle cases, she will make call to close bars and restaurants, other high-risk settings. But schools are not considered high-risk for transmission, so less likely would be need to go to remote learning.
