While the introduction of 5 paid sick days will impact the lives of many workers, a clear and historical leadership opportunity has been missed despite enormous public pressure for 10 days, now two years into a pandemic. A #paidsickdays thread 🧵 :

Clopens suck. Especially the ones where you work a Saturday night and then you're back in first thing Sunday morning for brunch. Did you know that some provinces require a certain number of hours off between shifts? In some circumstances clopens could be a labour violation

Great news for federally regulated workers. This sets the bar where it should be: at 10 days of permanent paid sick leave. We'll continue to work with @bcfed and our allies in the community to win the same coverage for all workers in BC. #bclab #canlab

Canada’s unions applaud the government's new law to require 10 paid sick days, protect healthcare workers & create safer workplaces. Paid sick leave saves lives. All parties must now work together to quickly pass this bill. #canlab #cdnpoli #PaidSickDays

When I began working in the charitable sector a decade ago, ten paid sick days was a given. Totally settled. Sorry partisan friends, but a so-called pro-labour government refusing to go above five in a pandemic is the @bcndp buckling to the business lobby, full stop. #bcpoli

By voting against #PaidSickDays the Ontario government is sending a clear message to all essential workers. Your work is essential. Your lives are not. If not a pandemic, what will it take? #EssentialLives

For the past year we've worked to raise the voices of restaurant workers. We've met with government officials, consulted on policy & provided worker insights to media. We're 100% volunteer driven and have more work to do. Help support our work by donating:

The WSN will continue to advocate for what statistics have continuously demonstrated; BC’s need for at least 10 days of permanent paid sick leave. The fight continues!

It’s disappointing that during multiple crises in B.C. priorities appear to rest in ensuring a so-called ‘win-win balance’ between the interests of corporate lobbyists’ and the assured protection of workers’ health - two very different priorities.

Workers shouldn't have to provide a sick note to access paid sick days. Not only does this place an unnecessary burden on our healthcare system, it also suggests employers are qualified to interpret what’s valid/necessary regarding a person’s private emergencies or health matters

The WSN calls for the removal of restrictive elements to the new 5 day sick leave protections, including the removal of a 90-day eligibility barrier which would effectively exclude many precarious and seasonal employees.

It’s more important than ever that the public understand that these 5 paid sick days, come January, are legally assured rights in BC, and that these standards must be enforced in a fair, effective and timely manner.
