Honolulu Airport recorded 7.92" Dec 6, 2021. This breaks the daily record (4.11" in 1988) and the single day record in the month of December (7.89" in Dec 12, 1987). This rainfall record also came in second for the all-time single day rainfall record 15.32" Mar 5, 1958.

New post: Upcoming pattern change likely to bring substantial rain and mountain snow to most of California. This will help mitigate the ongoing/severe Western U.S. snow drought in some places, especially Cascades/Sierra Nevada. #CAwx #CAwater

There will likely be some improvement in these numbers over the next ~10 days, especially in the Cascades/Sierra. The interior Rockies will probably see less improvement, as much less precip and relatively warm temperatures are still expected to the east. #CAwx #COwx

Remarkable early-season "#SnowDrought" across essentially the entire American West. SWE <20% of average in Cascades, Sierra Nevada, & Southern Rockies. Interestingly, this includes watersheds in PacNW that have been very wet--pointing to key importance of warming temperatures.

Upcoming pattern change in CA still looking solid, with substantial rain & mountain snow likely over next couple of weeks. Ensembles not as wet as operational model runs, but still suggesting "near-average" precipitation for mid-Dec (which is usually a pretty wet period!). #CAwx

Significant pattern shift now appears likely in California in coming days. Initial pair of systems will be weak, bringing scattered showers Tues & then slightly more widespread showers Thurs. But additional wetter systems are likely thereafter, along with cooler temps. #CAwx

Siberian wildfires emitted a record amount of carbon dioxide in 2020. This year's wildfires nearly doubled it 😬

A crowning forest fire is, ah, not exactly typical in the mountains of Colorado (around 8,000ft elevation) *in December.* But, due to record warm and dry conditions, that's exactly what's happening today. (Some snow is finally likely this coming week, though.) #COwx

Worth noting that heavy snowfall and high winds are not that unusual at the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa volcanoes, which both have peaks over 13,500 ft in elevation! What's much more unusual is the *lack* of snow across nearly all of the contiguous United States... #HIwx

Blizzard Warning for Hawaii, and before most of the continental US? Snow accumulations of 12" or more and wind gusts over 100 mph are expected on the summits of the Big Island this weekend. A look at the number of days since each NWS office last issued a blizzard warning.
