I'm sorry. Under Felony Murder Rule several moms and myself watched our sons get sent away for life, in 3 separate unrelated cases. None were ever armed, never hurt a soul and in a couple cases, weren't even at the scene when a death occurred. Horrible law...😡

The punishment should always fit the crime, period. Years of harsh sentencing, enhancement laws, over zealous prosecutors and lack of legislative action have led us to where we are today. It's time to unscrew the screws...

@GovRonDeSantis Our current sentencing guidelines are proof our criminal system is broken. Not enough guards, inmate idleness, and long sentences do not work. Florida needs #RestorativeJustice . Addressing the crime, repairing the harm works & improves public safety.

@WeHEARTFla Texas closed 10 prisons in recent years and saved $3 billion thanks to these changes. Rather than building new prisons, Texas officials invested in 800 new residential substance abuse treatment beds outside prison walls, 2700 new addiction treatment beds within prisons, more than

For a real eye-opening bit of info of how tax dollars are spent on incarceration costs and the cost to us all, read this article by professor Valerie Jenness of Criminology, Law and Society at UCI:

Florida has passed no meaningful cj return bills since 2015. That was the same year Gov. Rick Scott granted clemency on a case cited in our bill. He also pointed out during said hearing about "inequitable results" pertaining to Florida's harsh sentencing laws.

@WeHEARTFla The #FloridaSenate has been gung-ho for #CJReform for the last 3 Sessions and for this 2022 Session. The Republican led House is the problem, meaning the House Leadership is the problem.

As a taxpayer who works, lives and votes in this state, many of our tax dollars are utilized statewide for the costs of many things related to incarceration. I studied this while in school for Criminal Justice. The financial cost is something we all bear collectively

@WeHEARTFla The County residents/ voters already know they don't pay prison costs of those convicted in their county. If they did have to pay, it would be through an increase in their home property taxes, and listed on the tax bill.

Keep in mind, the Florida state legislature as a whole is comprised of the upper chamber being the Senate and the lower chamber being the House of Representatives. There are also several committees where bills also have to be heard to be considered.

@WeHEARTFla @FLSheriffs No, the House is the problem. Many groups lobby them on the group's desires, but only the Legislature can change or enact Laws.

People don't know what they don't know...until those taxpayers are educated on the cost, things won't change.

@WeHEARTFla @FLSheriffs The #FSA and #PBA will never lobby for #CJReform as long as the residents/voters in their counties don't have to pay for the cost of prison for those convicted in their county or city.

Either way, it's time to stop the blame game. It's not accomplishing a thing. We've heard all the excuses from being the Governor's fault to the FSA. Perhaps a brighter light shed on the legislative lag will allow for things done in the dark to come to light.

That's just a part of the problem. Consider the @FLSheriffs lobbying against reform as well. It is a multi-faceted problem. It has gone on for too long and now we're beyond crisis level, our system is in collapse. Tax dollars being wasted, year after year...

Our system is so horribly broken and decrepit. I am truly ashamed of how we, for such a "civilized" society we claim to be, can treat other human beings like dirt and then presume it's someone else's problem to fix. Epic fail, folks...😪

My friends who have gotten out of prison after yrs tell me how their family & friends don't recognize them - not physically speaking but emotionally & psychological. They entered as kids & now their world views have been shaped by a corrupt system that spent yrs dehumanizing them

We need to end mass incarceration, rehabilitate, educate and make tax $ work in favor of change instead of playing the blame game, pointing fingers and throwing even more taxpayer $ down the drain. Why is this so difficult? @GovRonDeSantis @FLSenate @FLHouseofReps
