If it’s January, Phil Hersh is telling you everything you need to know about the US Figure Skating Championships. And doing it in the authoritative and commanding style that is @olyphil ’s trademark.

Gracie Gold hoped nationals would be a cherry on top of her “pretty successful comeback attempt.” In short program, it was that and more. My @NBCSports @NBCOlympics story:

"What does it tell him about how this community sees him or values him?” his mother asked. "He gets no sympathy from me," the police chief said. "If he had shown up to court the first time, he wouldn’t be in the situation."

With the use of FOIA and *a lot* of door knocking in Kankakee, we found Amauri. Gee, 19, said this was the 2nd time he had been stopped by cops and questioned about a crime he didn't commit. “I’m a Black teenager in Kankakee. You just expect stuff like this to happen to you."

Police initially said they arrested two men - one Latino and one Black - in connection to the courthouse gun battle. They later announced that one of the men was not involved in the shooting, but was being held on an unrelated warrant. @mariahfrush and I wanted to know more.

In addition to raising questions about the legal system's inequities, this story is also a valuable reminder that in chaotic breaking news situations, the first version of events often times does not reflect the reality.

Stopped by police after deadly gun battle at the Kankakee Courthouse, Amauri Gee, 19, was never truly a suspect. But he spent the night in jail because he had missed traffic court and didn't have $200 to post bond. Story by @mariahfrush and me.
