The sad fact is that had any player scored 41 goals in 29 league games in La Liga or the Premier League there wouldn’t have even been a debate over who deserved the Ballon D’Or. Lewandowski may not have won but this was, in truth, a massive defeat for the Bundesliga.

@SBienkowski Lewandowski the first German-based player to finish in the top two since 1996. Only one other German-based outfield player has even made the podium since then. The voting systems in these awards are all about perception and global appeal.

@SBienkowski I would say, people realize when things are fraudulent. I think in reality this has further degraded the reputation of the Ballon d’or is a meaningless trophy

@SBienkowski Agree in general, although it's more a case of La Liga bias. No EPL winner in 13 years and only 2 since 1968.

@SBienkowski It's a popularity contest, that's it. Prize is meaningless nowadays

@SBienkowski Sure if Kane does that he wins but I don't know how much the Bundesliga cares. It's not really that type of league for better or worse. They don't really care about that. They complain for two hours and move on.

@SBienkowski I don’t think it’s about the league, rather it’s about the politics in the award. I lost interest in the award since 2018
