I’m sure a lot of people are already bored to tears by my incessant pushing of Trillions. But I honestly think that this is one of the biggest, least appreciated economic stories of our times. So here is a thread with teasers and some bonus photos.
I’ve long thought life expectancy is a pretty decent blended indicator of quality of life, and New Zealand’s is about 82 years, above OECD average. US is 77.3 years, and is the only OECD country where average life expectancy is falling.
There’s like 300-350k actual Qatari citizens and their average and mean income will be astronomical. But the vast majority of inhabitants are basically indentured servants. Life is great if you’re the former, less in the latter category…
If anyone thinks life is better for the median person in Mississippi than in New Zealand they need their head checked though. The fact that Qatar’s GDP per capita is so *low* shows the obvious weakness of these measures.

Best part of finance twitter so far today is assorted hacks lining up to say Russia has defaulted on its external debt for the first time in a century, and assorted EM/sov debt anoraks lining up to tell them they’re wrong (it’s not the first time)
