Also worth noting that this is a discussion about a *cap* not a *floor* - Unclear why WH didn't keep original cap pledge and just not fully meet if if logistical issues arose. Hard not to read this as policy reversal, and then a reversal of the reversal when there was blowback https://t.co/snfYP07c7d

@PressSec Would note today's directive did include the possibility of this (h/t @JasonHoffman93) But it certainly wasn't explicit, nor was there any indication a new increase was on the table for this fiscal year, by May 15 or otherwise https://t.co/NfuJrxknVL

@PressSec @JasonHoffman93 And whatever the new May 15 determination number is, the new Psaki statement makes pretty clear it won't be 62,500 "Given the decimated refugee admissions program we inherited, and burdens on the Office of Refugee Resettlement, his initial goal of 62,500 seems unlikely."

New @PressSec statement, following flood of Hill Dem criticism of refugee cap decision, says today's directive was designed to open more slots to different regions immediately, and Pres. Biden will release a new, increased cap number for the fiscal year by May 15 https://t.co/osFJoD1p71

One thing to remember is that the 62,500 refugee figure Biden pledged was already a prorated figure for a fiscal year that was half over. An apples-to-apples comparison is that Biden pledged 125,000 refugees and decided to stick with 15,000. Quite the stunning drop.

Biden will not lift the refugee cap this fiscal year, an administration official tells @kaitlancollins. Just two months ago, the State Department had proposed raising the Trump-era refugee cap to 62,500.
