I am in awe of all of my AAPI colleagues who worked tirelessly to put together this incredible issue together even after the horrific anti-Asian violence in our community. Incredibly proud to work with them today and every day. https://t.co/u7rDQ1IWU5

1/ For many Asian and Asian American women, the violence in the Atlanta shootings felt intimately familiar. @cadylang and @PaulinaCachero detail the history of intertwined racism and misogyny that has left Asian women in America particularly vulnerable https://t.co/lXfenQSaqt

On 3/15, I agreed to write this. On 3/16, the Atlanta shootings happened--making this essay feel infinitely harder, but infinitely more important to write. So honored to have it alongside the work of these amazing Asian and Asian American photographers. https://t.co/tUfnhrvu31

A very poignant quote from @cadylang about what it's like to be an Asian woman in America: "Asian and Asian American women are simultaneously fetishized and despised, hypervisible as subjects of desire but disposable as people." Read our full story here: https://t.co/YioRBoirvn

Meanwhile, racist depictions of Asian women in entertainment and pop culture embedded these perceptions of women in the American consciousness, perhaps most notoriously through the “me so horny” line in  "Full Metal Jacket," which has been sampled in several popular songs.

The U.S. cemented hypersexualized stereotypes of Asian women by passing legislation that superficially profiled them as prostitutes. Later, the military set up sites for local Asian women to “entertain” troops near bases abroad, commodifying Asian women’s bodies.

Targeted attacks against Asian women aren’t new. @cadylang and I wrote a piece about the long history of intertwined racism and misogyny that Asian women have experienced in America—and how it continues to make us vulnerable to violence. https://t.co/YioRBoirvn

Hollywood Westerns long ago popularized the image of the gallant white cowboys of American lore. Although these classic films largely exclude the riders of color who helped settle the West, historians estimate that one in every four cowboys was Black.

We must confront our biases in covering mass shootings in the U.S. because they happen all the time—and many are overlooked. https://t.co/SVffCldL3M
