A "compromise" will last just as long as Russia requires to prepare for the next war

Yet another frozen conflict, yet another temporary holding pattern, yet another face-saving compromise will not end the pattern of Russian aggression or bring permanent peace. "Off ramp" is the wrong metaphor

@NickCohen4 If my thesis is right, Putin's ruling principle is national renewal through destruction, not "stability." That means he'll always be seeking something to destroy - and Ukraine will continue to be a convenient target until the Russian military is totally defanged.

@NickCohen4 @anneapplebaum „Compromise” or MACHNIOM? Is it possible to predict when Lukashenka will announce the act of accession of Belarus to Russia? Perhaps when 🇷🇺 soldiers return home?

@NickCohen4 How many times do have to say this? Putin hears "off-ramp" and he thinks "weak chumps".

@NickCohen4 @anneapplebaum Exactly! Russia has shown all its difficulties in conducting complex military operations. If the current Russian leadership remains in office, any treaty will only be seen by them as a temporary suspension of hostilities. The war will resume in 2 or 3 years.

@NickCohen4 Compromise requires some credibility of partners. And Russia, and especially its current authorities, have no credibility.
