The Franco-British row between Macron and Johnson isn’t really about refugees. It’s about the total collapse of trust. Two neighbours, separated by a narrow channel of water and a sad gulf of mutual suspicion from @TheEconomist

Wonderful exhibition of work by Dame Laura Knight @MK_Gallery who deserves to be better known. Her subjects range from portraits, circus and ballet to powerful evocations of the skills of war workers, like this which was voted best picture @royalacademy in 1943. Well worth going!

In that case I’d be interested to see what a letter designed to appeal to the government’s supporters would look like!

The Borders Minister Damian Hinds insists the letter sent by the PM to Emmanuel Macron about migrant crossings was ‘supportive and collaborative’.

It was an excellent speech and my reactions here show I agreed with all he said!

Great speech by John Kerr in House of Lords. The UK is not a popular destination for refugees. We’re way down the list. The dangerous sea route is the only refugee route now our govt have shut safe routes. The facts do not support govt case for cruelty.

The French have lost all confidence in Boris Johnson and his government after a series of missteps – but the migrant crisis demands the relationship is rebuilt, writes @LordRickettsP.

Another case of the French having to correct a No10 account of a PM-Macron discussion. None of this helps confidence. Wouldn’t it be a good idea to put out an agreed joint statement (as Biden did after talking to Macron)?

Powerful intervention by French gov's spokesperson: 1. PM letter does not reflect everything FR has done & is doing to address migration 2. UK refused to send ppl to process asylum claims in France (which wd prevent ppl taking boats) 3. Letter not true to PM-President call

Macron repeats several times here his demand that the British should be ‘serious’. Couldn’t be clearer.

Emmanuel Macron on Boris Johnson's letter: "I am surprised by these methods that are not serious. You don't communicate from one leader to another on subjects like this by tweet or letters made public. Really. Come on." Said Britain needed to "be serious".

So French anger is understandable. But in my view they were wrong to cancel the invitation to Patel. The priority must be finding practical solutions to stop this murderous trafficking in human lives. The Sunday meeting of European Ministers will be less useful without the Brits.

A good guide to why France has withdrawn the Home Secretary’s invitation to a meeting on the migrant crisis this weekend. The request that France agree to take back all the migrants arriving here who the U.K. decides are ‘illegal’ may be another factor.

If you tried to write a letter designed to irritate France, this would be it: 1 self-congratulate and take moral high ground 2 make letter public, to enhance 1 3 tell France and EU to do more to patrol a border that the UK left EU in order to regain control over Breathtaking

Not easy for either side but it’s time to move beyond comfort zones. Allowing UK police as observers w’d build confidence that each side was doing its best. A processing centre w’d provide a safe route for those who have a strong case and might encourage others to apply in France

Thanks @EvanHD for the chance to discuss migrant issue on BBCR4 PM programme just now. I suggested France agree UK police in observer capacity on their coastline, and UK agree to set up a processing centre in France where those with justified asylum claims c’d come to UK safely.

A thoughtful analysis of the case for a UK-France re-set from @GeorginaEWright and @MrjDuclos. I agree that now’s not the time for a major new Treaty, that the first step is to rebuild trust on both sides and that the best way forward is probably to launch some specific projects.

Our ⁦@LordsJHACom⁩ has written again to the Home Sec about the chaos at the borders which will be the result of the EU’s introduction in 2022 of a new system of entry-exit checks, unless the UK and EU work together to prepare. Our letter is here👇
