Unfortunately, this story continues to be relevant. Mass shooting survivors have been forming communities to help each other heal. I followed one group (@rebelsproject) for a year: #massshooting #guns #shootings #Masstrauma #support #survivors #healing

When I worked there 4 years ago (what!?) it felt like more of a when than if I’d eventually be held up.

Devastated this happened to a colleague of mine but glad they're physically okay. This could have been any of us. It's terrifying to be out working right now. How are we supposed to do our jobs safely?

The amount of horror stories I heard from mass trauma/shooting survivors when I was doing a story on ppl in that community was awful. Ppl likely don't remember the reporters who did their jobs well, they remember the ones who re-traumatized them. Try not to be that person.

JOURNALISTS WHO REPORT ON TRAUMA: I got an email today from a homicide survivor whose son was murdered 4.5 years ago. He was killed outside their home, while she was inside. She was with him right after he was shot. Imagine the layers of trauma. . .

In 2019 I did a story about the fact that there have been so many mass shootings in the U.S. that the survivors have been creating support groups to help each other heal. I witnessed Columbine survivors counseling Marjory Stoneman Douglas survivors.

Columbine was 22 years ago. 22. You couldn’t have paid me to believe this is where we would be 22 years later. In the same damn spot.

.@dataeditor and I, who launched this database three years ago, just realized there have now been more than 300 school shootings in this country since Columbine. A staggering figure, but one that was far from inevitable. America's choices brought us here.

Re: #oxfordhighschool shooting. PLEASE read this guide for trauma informed reporting. This applies to reaching out to survivors for comment as “experts” as well. Take care of yourselves. #massshooting #Oxford

Anyway, set your filters, log off and bookmark for reading later: “responsible reporting and newsroom decision-making now demand baseline literacy in trauma concepts and emerging reporting standards.”
