Lotta people waking up today and thinking that they're not going to bother creating a billion dollars worth of unrealized gains, if they'll only get to keep 76.2% of it.

The tell that someone's actually on Team Covid rather than Team Freedom is that they're interested in kids having the freedom not to mask, but not in the freedom for kids to have access to a vaccine that is in the nearest drugstore.

Imma tell you that a lot of parents have been carrying around a lot of covid-related anxiety, and so right now my group chats are full of "Vaccine approved!" messages. (My 9 year old is getting his jab as soon as the CDC lets him have it.)

Stephen: “This is a question I hated being asked when I was your age, but —.” Matilda Wolfers: “Oh, no. I know this one. What do you want to be when you grow up?” Stephen: “Nailed it.” @JustinWolfers: “That’s the child of a labor economist right there.”

apparently fragile masculinity exists, but in certain circles you advertise your fragility.

A listener wrote to ask if it’s a “red flag” that his fiancé doesn’t want to take his last name. No it’s not just a red flag. It’s a dealbreaker. Men, don’t marry women who won’t take your name. That’s a wall of separation she wants to keep between you. It won’t be the only one.

At first glance this seems intrusive. Then you realize it's a private sector company trying to protect its workers, and then it not only seems normal but right. There's no big brother in sight.

It's not happening. If it were: 1. He could name some actual prices rising at annual rates in triple digits 2. The US dollar would have crashed 3. He would be making dramatically different choices with his portfolio

The latest @Freakonomics podcast covers some pretty personal territory, as @BetseyStevenson and I (and other economist-parents) discuss our approach to parenting. But the real star (I'm biased!) is our daughter describing growing up with econo-parents.

Neoclassical economics is a hell of a drug. It has no theory of prices, no account of inflation, and its models all presume the existence of a perfectly rational "homo economicus" who is a "utility maximizer" with perfect information. 1/

Of all the terrible things Donald Trump did as president, pushing the political polarization of initial public health measures (masks, closures), and refusing to work to depolarize the ensuing reaction to vaccines, will, I think, go down as the worst.

I feel the use of ``stagflation’’ is wrong. We are not seeing anything like stagnation. What we are seeing instead is very strong growth, fueled by private and public demand, hitting supply constraints, and leading to some sharp price increases. Nothing to do with stagflation.

In 2015, 81% of Dems and 67% of Republicans favored mandatory childhood vaccines against infectious diseases. In 2020, the gap was similar. Now, GOP support has dropped significantly -- below a majority.
