For those who earn £2m a year, scrapping the 45% rate means an extra £92,500 in your pocket. For those who earn £30,000 a year, it means no change at all, except for weaker public services.

How do you look at what's going on in the country and conclude it's the wealthiest 1% who need helping?

"Teachers? Healthcare workers? Young people who can't get on the housing-ladder? Older people who can't get care? Screw you all: I'm going to spend money cutting tax for the richest in society."

@JolyonMaugham It's been clear for quite some time now that they are in it purely for themselves and their wealthy friends. The rest of us aren't even on their radar. They shouldn't be anywhere near government.

@JolyonMaugham How can @Steven_Swinford report with a straight face that "The Chancellor set £14.8bn aside to fund tax cuts....it is far more than the reserves gathered by his predessors"? He hasn't gathered ANY reserves. He's BORROWING £183bn this year alone

@raycasey2003 @JolyonMaugham @Steven_Swinford This sort of reporting infuriates me too. It's utterly ridiculous.

@JolyonMaugham This is what happens when you have a government that feel they can do whatever they want and not be held to account (hint hint Jo)

@Spuddie79 @JolyonMaugham I think that they are doing what people elected them to do. No one voting Tory expected anything else. Cutting tax substantially on earnings over £150k is what people elect Tory's to do. They will also be some stale breadcrumbs for the middle.

@JolyonMaugham Listening to some people I meet, it sometimes feels like they identify with the very rich *as if they were rich too* even though they really really aren't... Is that the disease of the Tory voter?
