I’d like to thank all the people who have taken the time, during this busy holiday season, to reach out and explain to me that, actually, I’m a man. Every single one of you is the first person ever to make that very clever point, which had never once before crossed my mind 🙏

So I'd just had my best game ever, and I'd historically done well on Fridays. But the score starts at 0 every game, would I be able to finish out the day, and tie Matt Amodio? I was about to find out!

But it's hard to really have regrets about what was still the 5th-highest non-Holzhauer score ever! Thanks (and apologies!) to Patrick and Brittany, they were both solid early but I was just completely locked in for Double Jeopardy!

Whew! That made up for a lot of the previous misses. I kind of regret not betting the $40K (obviously), had I done so I would have had the highest single game total in history of anyone not named Holzhauer. (BTW, his *average* score was higher than what I got in this game!!!)

I have a weirdly distinct memory of a chapter heading in an American history textbook saying "1890: The End of the Frontier", so as soon as the clue came up, I knew I had it

Ultimately I went with $25,000, which still was at least close to the biggest wager I'd ever made. And I got it!!! Man, that felt good!

So, now I had a decision to make. I could have bet up to $40,000 in Final, and I definitely considered it. Maybe had I not been spooked by my recent big-money misses I might have, but I'm not sure, it just felt like such a big amount to risk.

That was part of a huge run of 10 straight for me, and when the dust cleared at the end of the round, I'd played my best game yet! $46,400 was my highest ever score going into Final, and by Coryat score, it was one of the 10 best games of all time!

I'm also a huge P.G. Wodehouse fan, his humor just hits me perfectly. It was nice to sweep the semi-theatre category, I had felt like I hadn't been doing *quite* as well as I should have in those categories, given my background as a theatre kid

I believe I've said before that I played Algernon in The Importance of Being Ernest several times as a child; it was one of my favorite theatre experiences, and I'm (distant) friends with both women who played Cecily with me to this day

I then got the next three clues, giving me the second Daily Double! I briefly considered going even bigger, but stuck with the same $5000 bet. Once I got it, I knew that a big payday was possible!

All of which came in handy as I got the first Daily Double! I had a $17K lead at this point, so I went with a modestly aggressive $5K wager. Benazir Bhutto is one of the still sadly few female heads of government in history, and things were starting to look very good!

For a relatively obscure country, I've found Nepal's politics over the last few decades fascinating, with monarchy, Maoist insurgency, and a bizarre mass murder of the royal family by the crown prince. Plus their monarchy was sometimes called "The Snake Throne," which is cool
