Hong Kong hotels are being turned into co-living places that sound a lot fancier than the shared houses of my 20s

Three years is a long time for Hong Kong’s hoteliers to keep hoping visitors will return as the city maintains a zero-Covid policy. A series of recent sales suggests some are giving up, says @JennHughes13

New York-listed Chinese stocks are down 55% in a year, buyouts are getting done at a discount () and even deals that don't raise funds, like Zhihu's, get hammered. That's the cost of geopolitics.

Quora-like Zhihu won’t raise a cent from its Hong Kong float, the first so-called homecomer to eschew the chance. It won’t be the last. Instead, insiders are selling, and that can weigh on valuations, which hurts regular investors, says @JennHughes13

"Far more airlines have given up serving #HK than have been suspended" - that idea that Hong Kong is no longer worth the bother is the real danger to Asia's so-called World City

Just 14 passenger-flight arrivals remain scheduled for today (Tuesday), tying last Tuesday's record low. None from the Americas, Africa, Europe, Middle East or Australasia. Far more airlines have given up serving #HK than have been suspended.

An activist investor helped disclose Bain's buyout interest in Toshiba. The move falls short of a classic bear hug, where a takeover target is pressured by a generous offer, but it puts the squeeze on the Japanese company all the same, says @JennHughes13

This one from the heart. HK without the Star Ferry? Unthinkable.

Lockdowns have Hong Kong's iconic green and white Star Ferry sailing into financially dire straits. Keeping the Wharf empire-owned boats afloat would preserve a bit of history and provide some much needed cheer in the city, says @JennHughes13

GoTo is eyeing a $29 bln IPO in Jakarta. Given rival Grab’s disastrous New York debut and Sea’s share price plunge, the timing may bruise its new backers. But waiting much longer risks eroding GoTo’s strong market position, says @JennHughes13

NEW: I’m not sure people appreciate quite how bad the Covid situation is in Hong Kong, nor what might be around the corner. First, an astonishing chart. After keeping Covid at bay for two years, Omicron has hit HK and New Zealand, but the outcomes could not be more different.
