I’m not sure why people are so surprised that the students are rising up—we’ve been feeding them a steady diet of dystopian literature showing teens leading the charge for years. We have told teen girls they are empowered. What, you thought it was fiction? It was preparation.

I’m teaching science fiction in film class. My students don’t know STAR WARS. I’m trying to connect the portrayal of Native people in THE SEARCHERS with the Jawas & Middle Eastern stereotypes. “So what stereotypes do we see in ALADDIN?” They’ve never seen ALADDIN.

We forget seeing our growth is the lubricant between competence & confidence. We keep going when we believe we are getting better. Kids don’t need grit cheerleading. They need us to help them see how their effort is building mastery little by little #DeliberatePracticeMatters

Students benefit greatly when teachers help them see their own progress, writes @ready4rigor. “As kids start to see they’re moving toward competence, they become more confident and engaged.” Zaretta Hammond on Equity and Student Engagement:

Libraries are magical third spaces in a school where students should not be sorted. Why would we sort the precious students in our care by finances? Students report feeling shamed--years and years later--by the traditional book fair model. There really is another way. ♥️ 10/10

If your district is facing #bookchallenge, consider approaching district staff with an equity lens. LGBTQ titles are less than 1-3% of a typical hs library collection but in recent cases receiving 60 % or more of challenges. Is that equitable if those are removed? #FReadom

Did you know that rowing was the first organized sport at Rutgers? 🤔 Rutgers organizes its first intercollegiate crew competition in 1870, facing the Lawrence Scientific School of Harvard, the top-ranked amateur crew of the time. #DYKRutgers | #RutgersPride | #RURahRah ⚔️

I’ve been saying this. I think it’s great that they have food pantries, and we also need to make sure everyone can afford to eat.

Instead of wasting time and money on meaningless teacher evals, let's focus on the following eval: How are you doing? Are you taking care of yourself? What do you need from administration to be successful? How can I best support you right now?

Noah felt like, given the storyline of the new DEXTER and the week we’ve had, we needed something lighter tonight. Postponing DEXTER to watch BAKIN’ IT. We are laughing.

PLEASE STOP SAYING SOUL FOOD CAME FROM WHITE PEOPLE'S SCRAPS. It's a complete lie that robs us of our agency, ownership, creativity and resistance and shows a lack of critical thinking and cultural literacy. Damn, I wrote a 400 page book about this with 350 books in the bib. 🤬🤬

At this point, I recommend that you follow your trusted weather source for forecast updates. And if you don't know for certain where your ice scraper/snow shovel are, the weather today is very nice for going exploring in the garage/shed.
