I know someone who gave 2 first doses today. ~30% of older Ontarians aren't boosted. ~50% of children aged 5-11 aren't vaccinated. There's still a lot we can do to prevent illness and death, individually and together*, over the coming weeks. *this is not a call for lockdowns

An implication is that we should be careful borrowing from the US or UK responses going forward too, when it comes to things like isolation time, mask requirements, vaccine mandates, etc.

While many of us say our governments could have done this thing or that better, it's also worth noting that we have suffered only about 1/3 the deaths of the US and UK, the two countries that might be considered our closest comparators. Worth keeping in mind as we go forward too.

Thanks @GillianKolla @Tara_Gomes and colleagues for this important research with actionable findings. Very glad @OntarioHealthOH is prioritizing overdose reduction efforts. So much more we can do to save lives and help people who use drugs live well.

Very privileged to be part of a report led by @Tara_Gomes that was released earlier this week looking at healthcare use among people who died of an overdose. We found 24% of people had a healthcare encounter in the week prior to death & 50% in the month before they died. 1/x

New @Ipsos poll says 56% of Canadians are worried about the long-term risks of boosters. Huge gap here between what scientists/health care professionals think (close to zero long-term risk) and what the public thinks. Needs a sophisticated communication campaign.

The @devisridhar column was very good, and so are these excellent points from @drgregkelly . I wonder if the tension is partly that we conflate lockdown measures with non-lockdown interventions (e.g., vaccination, nurse staffing, testing, masks, ventilation, etc.)?

"Science has defanged Covid, time to get on with our lives" This, by usually reasonable Devi Sridhar, is a huge worry because it is almost entirely disconnected from the current reality that the pandemic is far from over and buys into a HUGE fallacy 🧵

Irrespective of whether one agrees with re-opening on Jan 31 or not, it makes sense to tilt the odds in our favour: 1. Change definition of fully vaccinated to 3 doses 2. More workplace mandates 3. School mandates 4. Automated or semi-automated booster dose appointments

As Ontario plans to open up again, we have little concrete idea how many people have had Omicron. Which means this is a gamble, from schools to hospitals, and it might work out. But it’s a gamble nonetheless.
