Rei our resident fandom Japanese translator did indeed confirm that she never used the Kanji for "love."
Something equivalent to "I like" or a crush like you say.
Sumire used the same Kanji for Boruto that Naruto used for Sakura in chapter 3.

Sumire is genuinely always thinking about Kawaki's well being and is suspicious of Amado, paying attention to how Amado might be using Kawaki for something, and she is bothered by it. She drops her disguise as the spy behalf Kawaki, which goes to say a lot on it itself.

Which is exactly how BoruSumi is led rn, the only thing feeding it is the knowledge that Sumire has a crush. Boruto and Sumire unlike Naruto and Sakura don't even meet or develop together, or does the romantic implication have anything to do with the plot itself.

Sumire isn't there just to supervise Kawaki, she felt a connection to him since the moment she met him, before she was even his caretaker, she saw herself in him and is trying to help him anyway she can because she feels the pain he has.

KawaSara is barely a ship nor does it have any "moment" that's about them. It's very much reached and decontextualized to the point even them talking or standing together is regarded as a "moment" by their fans. It's funny really lol.

Mitsuki spends time with Sarada, but nothing close to how much Boruto does with Sarada and has already. They don't compare to the bond Boruto and Sarada already has, and Mitsuki knows those and supports them wholeheartedly instead.

Sumire joined up with Amado as well, to keep an eye on Kawaki herself, BY HER OWN FREE WILL, because she was the only person who could get close to Kawaki because he trusts her as well. It's not about just being together, there's more to it than that, and you know it.

Again, SUMIRE BEGGED NARUTO TO GIVE KAWAKI A CHANCE, She was the first person who cared for Kawaki, who didn't see him as a monster or a weapon, she saw that he was scared and she wanted to help him herself, despite the danger she put herself thru for that.
