Lots of interest in Biden's popularity recently. Our latest Reuters/Ipsos poll shows the president's net approval improving somewhat since this summer, and at present it appears to be moving on an opposite track from U.S. covid infections. More here:

Our latest Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Biden's popularity dropping to the lowest level of his presidency. And for the first time, less than 1/2 approves of his handling of Covid. Approve%/Disapprove% OVERALL: 44/50 (-6) COVID RESPONSE: 48/46 (+2)

While everyone is talking about the #TexasAbortionLaw it's worth repeating that a majority of Americans (56%-32%) want abortion to remain legal. That includes not just a majority of Ds and a plurality of Is, but a sizable minority of Rs too.

Finally, we're not seeing any erosion in confidence in the Dems' ability to handle nat'l security or foreign policy.

First, only about 20% think Biden is primarily responsible for what happened in Afghanistan. In fact, there is a lot of blame to go around (Notice that Trump + GWB nearly = Biden)

It will take some time before we'll see how this impacts Biden politically. But already a few readings are worth mentioning...

Just 38% of Americans approve of the way President Biden handled the evacuation from Afghanistan, and most wanted the military to stay until at least all U.S. citizens could get out. ICYMI

A few experts said in our story today that people may be responding to the pandemic the same way they respond to the economy: They're give the president an unfair amount of credit in good times and an unfair amount of blame in bad times.

It's also interesting that independents - who will be a crucial voting bloc for Dems in 2022 - are losing confidence in Biden on COVID even though they stand with him and the Dems on masks and other preventive measures.

This is noteworthy for a few reasons. Biden campaigned on his credibility, positioning himself as the best candidate to lead the US out of the pandemic. Americans' trust in Biden with COVID is a big reason why he won in 2020, and their growing disapproval could be a big problem.
