Some professional news, as they say: Look at HER! My book "Pests: How Humans Create Animal Villains" is available for pre-order! Quick, get it before it's cool. Am I mildly in love with the cover? Yes.

"In the insightful conclusion, Brookshire emphasizes that we must give up some power, tolerate occasional inconvenience, and acknowledge that there are some things we cannot control."

it is important to remember that James Bond lied to you: diamonds are not forever. ZIRCONS are forever.

Just a few images from S Korea CDC's smart guidances. @CDCgov could a learn a lot from them.

Finally got around to reading @annehelen 's "Can't Even" (via audiobook) and it's both good and also infuriating and now I'm digging mulch but with RAGE for all those who ensure I'll never be able to retire.

FYI, rats can't barf. It's a one way system. They rely on a very strong sense of smell to avoid suspicious stuff...and if they eat it? They swallow clay and stuff in an effort to dilute. (By @RachelNuwer via @RachelFeltman )

You always gotta watch the quiet ones! Including...the quiet raccoons. Who are better at solving cognitive tasks than the aggro raccoons. Introverts, we'll inherit the earth. Love this from @betsymason

Read @BeeBrookshire 's thread. Read @AnnaNowo 's story. Be piqued by this quote: “'Accepting that prestige is a good measure of excellence means that we’re not looking into the history of how things became prestigious,' Gonzales says.”

Maybe the grads of big unis DO end up looking better and having the nice K awards and big name pubs...they DO end up the best...but the road to get there might not be the same. Even at the PhD level, everyone swoons for Harvard.

(Side note my grad school wasn't famous but it WAS perfectly good! Excellent research, smart as heck people.) And I wonder how much this bias goes ALL THE WAY DOWN. Are grant paylines different if you're at the famous uni? Big journal acceptances?

It also makes me think about how I knew, going into grad school, that odds were low. But I wonder how many of us would have stayed in my non-famous grad school if we'd been told that those low odds were even LOWER if you didn't go to Harvard.
