So proud of @Augustana_IL student Katie Dejulius who worked with us @BCM_TropMed as part of @bcmhouston SMART program. She took on a project in its infancy & helped get it off the ground. Her findings will challenge current Ascaris dogma on how larvae migrate through the host. 1/

5/6 Screening for Chagas is done by sending blood sample for a T. cruzi IgG assay. If the screening test is +, a blood sample should be sent to the @CDCgov for confirmatory testing. If confirmatory is +, patient should be treated! @BCMTrop_Med @EvaClarkMD @JillWeather @Rojelio

4/6 Anyone who (1) has resided an endemic part of Latin America, (2) who’s mother is from an endemic area, or (3) who can recognize the triatomine insect should be screened!

3/6 (photo credit: ) Most people with Chagas disease live in Latin America, where the triatomine insect vector is endemic. However, triatomines are also present in the southern US (including Texas!). @TexasChagasTaskforce

2/6 Most people with Chagas disease are asymptomatic and do not realize they are infected. However, 20-30% go on to develop cardiac or gastrointestinal sequelae. People with risk factors should be screened as soon as possible.

Thread: 1/6 In recognition of #WorldChagasDay, take a moment to consider the 7-8 million people living with #Chagas disease, a chronic parasitic infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. Though under-recognized, Chagas is preventable and treatable!

TropMed Pearl: When #COVID-19 pandemic is controlled enough to allow travel, are you planning to work abroad? Don’t forget, register with your embassy, get travel insurance, #travelvaccines, and #malaria chemoprophlaxis! Most importantly, use common sense while traveling!
