After long week sharing some good news: I’m writing new book! It's story of anti-democratic efforts to entrench white minority rule but also movements to resist it. Here’s news from Publisher’s Marketplace. It builds off Give Us the Ballot & thrilled to work w/

So honored & thrilled to receive
@SidneyHillman
prize for magazine journalism this year! Big thanks to my colleagues
@MotherJones
& to everyone who's supported my reporting on voting rights 👏
Never forget that Mitch McConnell killed filibuster to confirm 3 Trump justices to take away voting rights but Manchin & Sinema refused to reform filibuster to protect voting rights
The same Court that twice gutted Voting Rights Act & upheld extreme partisan gerrymandering now giving green light to extreme racial gerrymandering. Black voters make up 27% of AL electorate but hold just 1 of 7 Congressional districts (14%) under GOP plan reinstated by SCOTUS
BREAKING: By a 5–4 vote, with Roberts joining the liberals in dissent, the Supreme Court halts a lower court order that required Alabama to redraw its congressional map, which diluted Black votes in violation of the Voting Rights Act.
PSA: I'll be on book leave for next few months working on project about minority rule that sadly becomes more timely by the day
So I'll be tweeting less & writing/researching more, but I promise it'll be worth the wait!
Big thanks to everyone who has supported my work 👏

ICYMI: Analysis by
@AriBerman
and
@MotherJones
shows that Georgians are 45X more likely to have their mail ballot applications rejected and ultimately not vote under new state voting laws.
“We’re seeing massive increases in voter disenfranchisement. A 4500% increase in rejected mail ballots,” Ari Berman says on the “real world evidence” of voter suppression.
Thank you
@AriBerman
and
@RyanLittleE
.
It’s very important to keep underlining all the evidence that today’s voter suppression may be more subtle on the surface than the old Jim Crow but still highly effective in cutting key groups out of the electorate.
This is exactly what
@SenatorSinema
&
@Sen_JoeManchin
, with eyes wide open, voted to enable by allowing Senate Republicans to veto any federal response to the red state measures making it harder to vote.
.
@AriBerman
: “Kemp requested his mail ballot on the Friday before Election Day and voted via dropbox on Election Day – two things that are now ILLEGAL because of the law he signed.”
We need federal voting rights legislation. Here’s what’s happening in GA:
.
@AriBerman
on the “real world evidence” of voter suppression:
“We’re seeing massive increases in voter disenfranchisement. A 4500% increase in rejected mail ballots."
Mitch McConnell: "States are not engaging in trying to suppress voters whatsoever."
GOP-controlled state legislatures: *engaging in a lot of voter suppression*
.
@LeaderMcConnell
has said that passing voting rights legislation is unnecessary because states are "not engaging in trying to suppress voters whatsoever.”
Facts on the ground in Georgia tell a different story.
A brief thread.
SCOOP w/
@RyanLittleE
: Georgia voters 45 times more likely to have mail ballot applications rejected & not vote in Nov 2021 vs 2020 after GOP passed new voting restrictions
That rate would've led to 38,000 fewer votes in 2020, 3x Biden's margin of victory
