Sea surface temperature departures from 1991-2020 average from @NOAA_ESRL hi-res data. Gulf of Alaska has dramatically cooled in only a few weeks. Southern Bering #sst near average, while the northern Bering & Chukchi Seas mostly below average. #akwx @Climatologist49 @UAFOceans

Tree Point Lighthouse, 45 miles SE of Ketchikan, reported a high temperature of 71F (21.7C) #OTD in 1938. This is the latest date in the year anywhere in Alaska with a temperature of 70F (21.1C) or higher. Image from #akwx @Climatologist49 @weather_history

Thursday 4pm AKDT surface analysis from @NWSOPC shows 944mb low near St. George Island. At 9pm AKDT peak wind 70mph at Unalaska Airport & as high as 84mph at @noaaocean Unalaska tide gauge. This storm was very well forecast days in advance by @NWS GFS. #akwx @Climatologist49

If you're interested in the Arctic since the end of the last ice age, this is really interesting. The paper is very technical, but the take way is that Ice Age mammals lived well into the Holocene & coexisted for millennia with the ancestors of today's Indigenous peoples.

Woolly mammoths were still on mainland Siberia (not just islands) at least until 3900 years ago. (The kind of thing you learn when you can pull DNA out of the ground, not just fossils.)

The @NWSOPC North Pacific surface analysis valid at 10am AKDT Thursday. Individually, either storm would be quite impressive, but two sub-955mb lows, now that's something. #akwx @Climatologist49

Getting toward crunch time: Thursday evening a 944mb low forecast just southeast of the Pribilof Islands is exceptionally strong for a Bering Sea storm so far east. Extremely high winds likely in the eastern Aleutians Thursday night into Friday. #akwx @Climatologist49 @KUCBNews

Pretty October afternoon Wednesday at Hwni'dilaexde (Summit), south of Cantwell at Mile 201 Parks Highway. 40F (4.4C) & light winds. Fun factoid: there was a CAA/FAA station and then Weather Bureau/NWS station here 1941-1976. Image courtesy FAA. #akwx @Climatologist49

Nominally for the Airport, @NWSFairbanks reports "Trace" snow depth for October 19th. So, despite the early season snow, establishment of the permanent snowpack is later than the long term average (Oct 18) but in keeping with a later snowpack recent years. #akwx @Climatologist49

Winter lovers rejoice: the normal high temp in Fairbanks (Airport) drops to 32F (0C) Tuesday and doesn't rise above freezing until March 30. Years ago, a former @NWSFairbanks meteorologist noted that Fairbanks' winters are just not long enough. #akwx @Climatologist49 @akswingley

Tuesday morning GFS has 942mb low centered right on the Pribilof Islands Thursday. This is getting into the territory of the great October 1978 storm that produced 100mph+ winds in the Bering & the lowest pressure on record at St. Paul (935mb). #akwx @Climatologist49 @KUCBNews

Very strong storm forecast in the southern Bering Sea Thursday afternoon. A center pressure 947mb is extremely low so far east in the Bering. If this works out the eastern Aleutians are right in the heart of those sustained 50kt+ northwest winds. #akwx @KUCBNews @Climatologist49

Coldest morning of the season so far in northern Alaska with several pockets of sub-zero (ºF) temperatures. Lowest reported thus far looks to be perennial cold spot @Toolik in the central Brooks Range at -11F (-23.9C), with Arctic Village at -9F (-22.8C). #akwx @Climatologist49

Alaska Gwich'in county has had near (modern) normal temperatures the first half of autumn. Chilly weather second half of September has largely balanced out milder than normal temperatures in early September and early October. #akwx @Climatologist49 @DinjiiZhuh @ArcticDaazhraii

The famous gray whale rescue was underway #OTD in 1988 at Barrow (Utqiaġvik). Suffice it to say that no copters or barges would be needed today, with no #seaice yet at Utqiaġvik. #akwx @Climatologist49 @ANC_Historian @weather_history @ajatnuvuk @CinderBDT907 @bertaglenn @NSIDC
