Blizzard warnings now issued for the GTA including Toronto and Hamilton. A 1 in a 100 storm in terms of how perfect this setup was for giving maximum snowfall in this part of the country. I was skeptical because most storms like this fade east. One for the books
Preliminary data suggest that sulfur dioxide emissions from massive
eruption are <20% than that from the 1991 Pinatubo eruption, lessening chance of detectable global climate impacts. Still likely a severe local/regional disaster, given magnitude.
First look at SO₂ in the Jan 15
cloud measured by
MetOp/GOME-2. So far, the SO₂ columns do not appear to be extreme; generally <20 Dobson Units (DU). For a Pinatubo-scale event we'd expect SO₂ columns >100 DU. More data soon.
A substantial and impactful winter storm will bring widespread heavy snow to southern and eastern Ontario on Monday, with hefty totals also creeping into the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Avoid non-essential travel, if possible.
